The absurdly action-packed battles are fun to watch for this seamless integration. This 3-D animation also doesn’t overwhelm that of the 2-D instead, it complements the latter nicely. The show doesn’t at all shy away from computer animation, which is used to render gun cannons, parts of Mechanoid battles, the academy campus, and so on. The animation itself is also high quality, as characters are drawn with very clean lines and the artwork is lovely to look at. Viewers are not only introduced to various leaders and their countries (Shtrayu, Havoniwa, Shurifon – I love these names) but also to a society directly influenced by religion and gender make up. This expansive, comprehensive, world is the series’ most impressive aspect. Not long before the girls start falling for Kenshi are we really exposed to the massive world of Geminar, a place that sports snippets of steam punk, fantastical garb and races (one of which is elf-like, complete with pointy ears, tall elegance, etc…), and exotically western names like Lashara, Wahanly and Dagmyer. They’re given more leeway and privileges in the academy, which trains Sacred Mechanoid pilots and is featured throughout this first volume of seven episodes, each of which is 50 minutes on two discs (DVD copies included.)
Interestingly, Geminar is home to a female-dominated society in which men are considerably outnumbered and therefore valuable if only as a means to continue the race.

War on Geminar is a spinoff series that tells the story of Kenshi Masaki, a 15-year-old boy who is unwillingly sent from his home on earth to the planet of Geminar to aid in an escalating world war. Funimation’s Blu-ray release opened a floodgate. But the most recent series, Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar (2009-10), is really what we’re here for – excuse the reminiscing. Tenchi Universe, in particular (one of now six different series), told a galaxy-spanning epic that culminated in the most emotionally satisfying conclusion my ten-year-old heart could have hoped for. Tenchi featured compelling and complex characters embroiled in all sorts of delicious conflict. And it wasn’t just this show that first made harem anime into a sub-genre.

Sometimes I felt no different from Ryoko (the space pirate) or Ayeka (the alien princess of Jurai), both of which nursed an unyielding desire for the “normal” and unassuming earthling, Tenchi Masaki.
Every day after school I’d rush home just in time to feed my addiction to DBZ, not having cared all that much for Gundam…but I loved Tenchi – and not just “loved,” but loved.
